If we ran them more often, they might run faster.

Information Services (IS) Manager

All of our worldwide operations rely on data stored on our servers in New York. We have a distributed data environment, but all of the servers are in the same geographic location. Each server is configured as a server cluster with two computers sharing one external data store. Once reason for this is that it lets us have one server running while we do planned maintenance on the other. If one server goes down, the other takes over for it automatically. However, we?re not usind redundant storage, so backups are critical. We can?t afford to have to repost more than 1 hour?s worth of data.

The data include tables partitioned across different server clusters. Our applications take care of keeping data updates consistent between the servers, but if you ever make changes to database object structure, you need to make sure it?s done to all affected servers at the same time.

Human Resources

Personnel changes are rather regular. At least one person gets hired or fired every week, usually more. Our standard is that when a user is called in for termination, access to all company data is cut off immediately. We call IS about the status change when we call the employee. When a new hire starts, their data access should be ready to go the first time they log on to the network.

Purchasing

EDI is a big part of our operations. Nearly all of our vendors and customer use EDI order management systems. We have one programmer who sets up whenever we get a new vendor or customer, but it takes too long and, accourding to the programmer, it?s too complicated. Data have to be pulled from several sources. It would be better if it came from a single soure.
